Look up a Rhode Island plate

See whether other drivers have filed reports against a plate.

A plate with no reports comes back clean — that is the common result, and it is not an error.

Avoidance & safety rules

Does a Jerk Alert report reach the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles? No — Jerk Alert filings are community records between drivers. They never reach the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles, any other government body, or law enforcement, and they do not replace the calls in sections 1 and 2. If you are in danger, call 911. The Terms prohibit following, approaching, or identifying another driver on any Jerk Alert platform.

Rhode Island bad driver reporting & safety guide

1. If it is happening now immediate danger

Emergency hotlines

  • 911 — for a driver who is an active danger to other people right now. That is a police matter, and no app is a substitute for the call.
  • No Rhode Island-specific line is listed here. We publish a patrol code only when a state police or DOT page carries it.

2. Reporting to Rhode Island law enforcement after the fact

Neither the hotlines above nor anything in this section is the licence-review route in section 3, and nothing filed on Jerk Alert reaches any of them.

Who takes the report in Rhode Island

  • The non-emergency line of the Rhode Island city or town police department, or the Rhode Island State Police with jurisdiction where it happened takes reports of dangerous driving that has already happened.
  • Bring: the plate (full or partial) and state, the vehicle’s make, model and colour, the location, the date and time, the direction of travel, and what you saw.
  • Expect a record rather than a ticket. An officer who did not witness the driving usually cannot cite for it, and what each agency acts on varies.

3. State DMV & licensing agency review

Public reporting accessNo public route found — not confirmed either way

Rhode Island’s own site and forms index publish nothing a member of the public can file. That is what the agency publishes, not a finding that no route exists; this page will change if the agency publishes one.

Who can file: Unknown. No Rhode Island DMV page publishes a reporting route for a family member, a neighbour or a witness — and none restricting one either. The only route the law names is clinical: a physician or optometrist may voluntarily report under R.I. Gen. Laws § 31-10-44(d).

What we did find

The DMV's Medical Advisory Board page sets out the Board's statutory basis, states that its sole function is to advise the Administrator, and gives a Board Secretary contact for questions — it describes no way for anyone to report a driver. The one reporting route Rhode Island law names is clinical: under R.I. Gen. Laws § 31-10-44(d), any physician or optometrist who diagnoses a physical or mental condition that in their judgement will significantly impair a person's ability to operate a motor vehicle safely may voluntarily report that person to the Medical Advisory Board.

  • The DMV's Medical Advisory Board page names a Board Secretary contact for questions, and the DMV's Contact Us page lists a Medical Review Board phone and fax under its Adjudication Unit; in practice, concerns are raised by phone or email to that office, which may or may not act on them.
  • You cannot count on staying anonymous. The DMV publishes the Medical Review Board's phone number but no instruction on who may call or how a call is handled; the Board is reported not to act on anonymous tips, so expect to identify yourself.
  • Anything the Administrator acts on turns on a specific, identified driver: the statutory power arises when a person's eligibility or continuing eligibility for a licence is questioned on the grounds of physical or mental fitness. A plate number is not enough to start one.

Will the driver find out who reported them?

No Rhode Island source states how a caller's identity is handled.

What can the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles do once a review starts?

  • Under R.I. Gen. Laws § 31-10-44, when a person's eligibility or continuing eligibility for a licence is questioned on the grounds of physical or mental fitness, the Administrator of the Division of Motor Vehicles may consult relevant specialist members of the Medical Advisory Board in determining that person's qualifications to operate a motor vehicle.

Statutory authority: R.I. Gen. Laws § 31-10-44.

Rhode Island is one of 18 of 51 US jurisdictions where a witness unrelated to the driver has no confirmed way to report them to the licensing agency (the 51-location study). That gap is one reason Jerk Alert exists.
